El Instituto de Investigaciones Estéticas tiene como tarea fundamental el estudio de la historia, la teoría y la crítica del arte mexicano, la conservación y defensa del patrimonio artístico del país. Además proporciona orientación en estas áreas a instituciones oficiales y privadas. La investigación está enfocada principalmente al campo de las artes plásticas y la arquitectura desde el periodo prehispánico hasta nuestros días; pero también da cabida al estudio del cine, la fotografía, la danza, la música, el teatro y la literatura. El Instituto difunde sus trabajos mediante coloquios, cursos, conferencias, seminarios, pero sobre todo por medio de publicaciones. Los libros editados por el Instituto son muestra de la importancia del trabajo de investigación realizado desde su fundación hasta la fecha.

The central task of the Institute is the study of the history, theory and criticism of Mexican art, along with the defense and conservation of the nation’s artistic patrimony. The Institute also provides advice and consultation on matters of its competence to private and goverment institutions. The research carried out by the scholars who are members of the Institute covers chiefly the areas of painting, sculpture and architecture from pre-Columbian time to the present, but film, photography, dance, music, theather and literature are also studied. The Institute spread abroad the results of its research in symposia, courses, lectures, seminars, and, above all, through its publications. The titles published since the foundation of the Institute prove its activity and importance.
