the painting of New Spain, a spin-off from the project for
cataloguing, studying and dissemination of the patrimony kept
in the Museo Nacional de Arte. In late 1999 the national art
gallery’s collection was extended due to the closing
of the Pinacoteca Virreinal de San Diego and the transfer
of its patrimony of 292 paintings. This catalogue presents

The Brushes of History. The Fabrication of the State, 1864-1910
This volume commemorate the third exhibition
aimed at reviewing the genre of history painting. The exhibition
was currently on show at the Museo Nacional de Arte between
September 2003 and February 2004. The material presented in
the third volume relates to events which took place between
the last third of the 19th century and the first decade of
the 20th, and which contributed to consolidating Mexico’s
project as a nation. This period included the inauguration
of the Empire under Maximilian, the restoration of the Republic,
the rise to power of Porfirio Díaz and the fall of
his dictatorship.

The Brushes of History. Archaeology of the
Regime, 1910-1955
This volume commemorate the fourth in
a cycle of exhibitions aimed at reviewing the genre of history
painting. The exhibition, which bring the series to its close,
was currently on show at the Museo Nacional de Arte between
September 2003 and February 2004. The fourth volume includes
graphic works of larger scope such as murals, as well as drawings,
oil paintings, engravings, photographs, posters, propaganda
and leaflets testifying to the coming into being of the present
Mexican State. The starting point for this process was the
Revolution, followed by the Cristero uprising, the Vasconcelist
movement, the Mural movement, the assassination of Álvaro
Obregón, the nationalization of the petroleum industry,
the creation of institutions, and concluded with the first
civil government of the PRI.
